2nd October can be said a great day as two personalities on this day landed on Earth: Mahatama Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shashtri. Both were simple, honest and dedicated to cause of Nation. Both the figures served the Nation until their last breath. Their contribution to nation is unparalleled.

Let us first talk of Mahatama Gandhi. We see that the entire life of Mahatama Gandhi is full of struggle. Right from the beginning his experience in South Africa against color discrimination shows us his continued struggle for justice. Later on his arrival to India and joining the freedom struggle is no less commendable. After the death of Bal Gangadhar Tilak, he took the command, and actively represented the Indian people in the emancipation of India. There are a series of occurrences of Non-cooperative movement, round table conference, Dandi march, Quit India movement, he led the country against the Britishers. Gandhiji’s sole weapon was non-violence. The personality of Gandhiji was such that thousands of people were ready to lay down their live at his command. In spite of all this, he never adopted the path of arrogance. He would evolve the solution of every problem in a peaceful way. Others leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel were so impressed with his dynamic personality that took him as his Guru.

Mahatama Gandhi always acted what his inner voice dictated him to do. His Satyagraha Movements were also based on truth. It is on account of this reason that the English govt had to think several times before his arrest. Today we enjoy the freedom. Have we ever thought how much we have fulfilled his dreams which he had seen before attaining the freedom?

The second distinguished name falling on this day is that of Lal Bahadur Shashtri. He was undoubtedly a very great person. He was very humble, noble and honest. His contribution to nation as freedom fighter and consequently as Prime Minister is remarkable. For the first time under his leadership, the country learned how to procure more wheat. In the short tenure of time India touched those great heights which seemed impossible. In the defence sector also Shashtriji’s leadership is commendable. During war with Pakistan, Indian troops showed such exemplary courage that Pakistan had to eat a humble pie. He gave a slogan ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’. If he had survived just a longer period, perhaps there could have been a different picture of India on the world map. During his tenure as Rail Minister in Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet, once a Rail accident rocked the whole nation. He took the moral responsibility upon himself and quit his chair. Shashtriji’s was of the opinion the one should limit one’s expenses and should lead a simple life. He was also a ¬†perfect follower of Gandhiji’s principles, that is why he still reigns in the heart of each and everyone.

Thus we see that how 2nd Oct is a gracious day. The greatness of the day lies in the qualities they inherited. In the current time our country is passing through many types of crises. No clear cut path seems to be in sight. there is a greater need to understand their work and achievements. Their qualities such as Honesty, Sincerity and nobility can be a great source of inspiration to us. It is the duty of all of us and not only of government to celebrate their birthday merely as custom. We ought to follow their qualities in words and deeds. Only then India can rise to those heights which they had anticipated. Only then, it will be a real tribute towards them in a true sense.
