Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts a national level competitive exam, Civil Services Examination (CSE) in India for recruitment of candidates to various Civil Services in Indian Government, including Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Revenue Service (IRS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), etc. There are two phases in which the examination is conducted:
1.The Preliminary Examination which further consists two objective type papers i.e. of General Studies and Aptitude Test
2. The Main Examination which consists nine papers of essay type followed by the Personality Test which is the Interview.
CSE is considered to be one of the most difficult examinations in the world. Nearly 5 to 6 lac candidates apply every year and only 2 to 3 lac candidates appear for the examination and those who appear have to face three stage process including interviews and written examinations.
Stage I (PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION) This is the first step for this examination and this is the qualifying test. The candidates who cleared this would appear for the next stage which is the Mains.
Stage II (Main Examination) This is the main test and also the second stage this includes the nine papers of essay type questions and the students qualifying this would have to clear the last and final stage i.e. Personality Test.
Stage III (Interview) This is the final stage of such exams which includes the personality test. This includes some arguments and counter arguments. It also includes the GDs i.e. Group Discussions.
Paper I This tests is conducted to check the candidate’s knowledge on current affairs, history of India and Indian national movement, Indian and World Geography, Indian Polity and governance, Economic and social development, environmental ecology, biodiversity, climate change and general science.
Paper II This tests is conducted to check the candidates’ skills in comprehension, interpersonal skills, communication, logical reasoning, English language comprehension skills, mental skills etc. The main necessity of the second paper is the good command of the candidate over his English language.
